Review…
Annual Offence Declaration
Parent Volunteers are an important aspect of our school
community. In order for parents to volunteer, they need to get a Vulnerable
Sector Screening (VSS, sometimes referred to as a “Police Check”). As always,
student safety is our number one priority, and the VSS is one step to ensuring
safety for all. As employees within the Board, we have gone through the VSS,
and each year we complete an Annual Offence Declaration so we do not need to go
through the VSS process each year. As parent volunteers, you can go through a
similar process. Please contact Sherry Clark in our main office, and she can
let you know when your VSS is due to expire. She can also print a copy of the
Annual Offence Declaration Form for you to sign. This step will allow your
original VSS to roll over from year to year (assuming you have had no
convictions).
Playground Safety
With the recent warm weather, we have had to close our
fields at recess time. We do this in an effort to save the grass and prevent
our fields from becoming “mud bowls”. The field closures will be in place for
April and the early part of May. We will evaluate the closures from time to
time. When the fields are closed, we have pavement only recesses, which places
all students in the school on a rather small area. For safety reasons (i.e.,
concussion/head injuries), we do not allow ball play to occur during these
times. The no ball play includes before and after school as well. We need
parents to help us keep all our children safe by ensuring that balls are kept
at home until the fields re-open. Teachers will still be able to take their
students outside for DPA and/or physical education classes and will be able to
supervise safe ball play during those times when only a few children are on the
yard.
Road Safety
I recently spoke with a concerned BHES neighbor. She
commented on the volume of traffic around the school, and understands the need
to drive children to school. Her concern was with individuals who park in the
southbound lane of Strathearn Ave in front of the school and let their children
cross the road. As we are all aware the roads in front of the school are
extremely busy both before and after school. With that in mind, I am asking
parents to be diligent about following the traffic rules around the school. If
we all do this, then our students will be safer.

Review…
Basketball
This week saw both our Intermediate Girls’ and Boys’
Basketball teams compete in the Central Area tournaments. Both teams
represented Bayview Hill with skill and fair play. We thank the players,
coaches and parents (who had to get their child to games and early morning
practices) for all their hard efforts. Basketball is becoming an increasingly
more competitive game in elementary schools, and our players rose to the
occasion. Go Bengals!
Skills Challenge
Mr. Chow took several grade 7 and 8 students to the York
Region Skills Competition. As a school community, we would like to
extend a congratulation to Hannah who placed 3rd overall in the
intermediate prepared speech competition, and our TV and Video production
students, Katie and Kim were successful in creating a Public Service Announcement
on the theme of 'wellbeing' from scratch including planning, filming,
editing, and rendering all within less than 4 hours. Go Bengals!
Electives
Although the forecast called for rain on Wednesday, February 28th, our
Intermediate and Junior electives day went forward. We were rewarded with NO
rain, and great spring conditions to enjoy a day outdoors. Thank you to all our
teachers who volunteered their time to co-ordinate this extra-curricular event.

X-Fusion Is coming April 3-5.
Welcome to X-Fusion! An interactive experience where
students learn self-regulation tools and strategies in order to discover the
power of their own self-realization! X Fusion uses high intensity energy flows
along with yoga inspired moves to experience different energy levels and affirms
the learnings with the "Feel, Choose, Fuse!" mantra!
You and your family are invited to come and enjoy the X Fusion
experience as well as learn some important self-regulation tools and tactics!
More details will be sent home in the coming weeks.
Diversity Night
Hello BHES families! School council has started planning for our annual Diversity Night. As a way of
celebrating the cultural diversity that makes our school special. We invite
BHES families to highlight their cultural background through this event. Diversity
Night will be held on Thursday, April
19th, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. We are looking for parent volunteers to represent their country and share their cultural
food, arts, and/or crafts.
If your family or a team of families wants to represent their
culture with food, your responsibilities would be:
1.
To purchase and/or find local restaurants to
sponsor food that represents your country. A donation letter from the school is
available.
2.
Provide or make a flag.
3.
Design a bristol board sign with information
about your country.
4.
Submit two questions and answers from
information on your bristol board display. This will be for student passports.
5.
Wear traditional clothing.
6.
You must be available to attend from 5:00 pm to
8:30 pm for set up and clean up.
If your family of a team of families wants to represent their

Review…
Lunch Drop Off
This is a reminder that all parents, grandparents, guardians
and visitors are to report to the main office each and every time they enter
the school. This procedure is in place to keep all persons in the building
safe. If families are dropping off a lunch for their child or children, they
are not to walk down the halls or up the stairs to deliver the lunch in person.
There is a table in the front hall specifically for lunch drop off. When you
drop off a lunch please make sure you put your child’s name on the lunch. Our
students know that if they do not have a lunch, they are to check the table. We
appreciate your attention to this important safety consideration.
Summer Institute
Looking for summer learning and fun activities for students
entering Senior Kindergarten to Grade 8? Summer Institute offers academic,
recreational and athletic programs and activities with intentional links to the
Ontario Curriculum.
The program runs for six weeks during July and August. It is
offered at 11 school sites around York Region.
For more information on dates, programs and locations,

Registration opens March 7. Families can now register
online, as well as in person or by mail.

Cardboard Boat Challenge/Robotics
BHES participated in two separate skills challenge events in the last couple of weeks. The Cardboard Boat event saw students designing, creating and racing a cardboard boat in a 25m swimming pool while a separate BHES video team captured the process and created a video. The Robotics event used our Lego EV-3 units (purchased by School Council) to complete challenges against other teams.

Review…
En Garde!
Les Trois Mousquetaires have descended on BHES as the Grade
8's are completing their unit on famous Francophones of the 19th century. Students
have been busy reenacting the Alexandre Dumas classic in an adapted ‘piece de
theatre’ version of the novel in their French classes. They read the play,
made elaborate props and makeshift costumes, and used drama all in a spirited
attempt to capture the finesse and the chivalry of the era. The students rose
to the occasion with lots of practice and verve, making this truly a fun
learning experience. In the end, thankfully the heroic Mousquetaires saved the
monarchy and the Queen’s 'collier de diamonds'.

Review…
Molly (a former BHES student) presented Helia, Cheryl .C.
and Connie (Grade 6 students in Ms. Leder’s class) with certificates and
letters from Sick Kids Hospital to acknowledge their leadership within the class
to help Molly with her Sick Kids Book Drive. The books were delivered over
the December break and helped to make a difference in the lives of many of the
patients at Sick Kids. The entire class also received a certificate and a
letter to thank them for all the generous book donations. A special thanks to
the parents for supporting this initiative.
Message From Our Trustee
With report cards coming home, this is a good time of year
to review your child’s progress and to set goals for the rest of the school
year.
As trustees, our goals are set out in the Board Multi-Year
Plan. In the coming months, trustees will be reviewing and updating this plan.
This process will include opportunities for public input, and trustees will be
out in the communities talking about this. More information will be shared
about this in the spring.
Developing and reviewing the Multi-Year Plan is just one of
our responsibilities as publicly elected officials. Trustee responsibilities
also include hiring the Director of Education, setting Board policies and the annual
budget, and communicating with the public.
This is a good time to learn more about the role of trustees
with the next municipal election taking place later this year on October 22,
2018. York Region District School Board has 12 trustees, elected by ratepayers.
As a trustee, listening and communicating with families is an important part of
my role. Students, families and members of the public are welcome to attend and
observe any public Board, Advisory or Board Committee meetings and to share
their views with us on policy and Board governance.
As we move into the second half of the year, I hope that you
are seeing evidence of your child’s learning and progress, and finding
opportunities to get involved in their learning and the life of the school.
I wish you all the best for a successful second term.
