Dear Families,
On behalf of the staff at Bayview Hill ES, we would like to extend our best wishes for a happy and safe holiday!  Thank you for working with us in so many ways to support your children in their learning.  It is the collaborative partnership between school and home that fosters success and achievement.
Please take time during the break to enjoy the warmth of  family and friends.  A celebration of our diversity was especially evident during our Grade 2 performance last week and as shown in their display in the front foyer of the school.  Happy Chanukah! Merry Christmas!  Happy Kwanzaa !

arts@baythorn Program

Page Content Would your child enjoy learning the Ontario curriculum through the Arts? If so, the York Region District School Board offers an elementary integrated Arts Program at Baythorn Public School. Students currently in grades four and five may apply for the arts@baythorn Program, where they will have the opportunity to explore the disciplines of Dance, Drama, Visual Arts, and Music while meeting the expectations of the Ontario Curriculum for grades five, six, seven and eight. To learn more about the arts@baythorn program, students and their families are invited to attend an information evening at Baythorn Public School on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. Applications will be online via the school website and available after January 16, 2015. Lost and Found

Items from our lost and found bins are located in the primary hallway of the school.  Through announcements, we ask students to check for any missing items and also remind teachers to  have students check as well.  At home, please remind your child(ren) to take a look for any items that may belong to them.  Typically, there are a range of items from jackets, sweatshirts, snowpants, lunchbags, boots and running shoes that are not claimed.  Items that are not claimed by the end of the day on Dec 19 are donated to charity.  Thank you.

MILK Program Volunteer needed

If you have time on  Thursdays from 12:30pm to 1:30pm  and alternate Fridays, our Milk program is in need of a volunteer to supervise the distribution of milk to our classrooms.  Please contact the school if you are interested.  Thank you for your consideration of this healthy school initiative.

Casual Lunchtime Assistants Needed

We are in need of casual lunchtime assistants to supervise students during the lunchtime from 12:45pm to 2:00pm.  A casual assistant could  be called the morning of a school day or when we are informed of an absence from our regular supervisors.   This is a paid position of approximately $12 per hour and follows the hiring process for YRDSB.  If you are interested in this position, please contact the school office.

This week Dec 8 - Dec 12 at a glance

On Tuesday morning, girls in grades 7 & 8 are invited to try out for our basketball team.  On Tuesday afternoon, our grade 7s will be attending a presentation by York Region Police on Cyberbullying.  It is an opportunity for our students to learn how to be safe while using social media and where to go for help.  This ties directly to a digital citizenship unit they are currently engaged in.

On Wednesday afternoon, our grade 2 team  will be presenting "December Lights, December Nights", a celebration of culture and traditions at this time of year.

On Friday afternoon, our Grades 4,5 & 6 will be entertained by a musical percussion group called TORQ.  TORQ creates music using instruments created from recycled items. They illustrate for children how we can make music with our voices, our bodies and objects just lying around.

Today, many of our primary, junior and intermediate students received Best of the Bengals' certificates of character.   Most students were recognized for their demonstration of honesty while some were also recognized for showing responsibility.  Congratulations to this month's recipients! Students from Ms. Sluser's grade 6 class hosted and prepared a presentation about empathy.   The focus for December will be walking in someone else's shoes and demonstrating that you understand and care about how others feel in situations.

COME JOIN US AS WE TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD IN ONE NIGHT

AND TASTE FOODS FROM A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT COUNTRIES!

We are looking for parent volunteers to host a country of their choice by preparing and/or purchasing food to represent their country and serving it at BHES on Diversity Night.

Diversity Night is hosted and supported by BHES School Council.

Kindergarten Registration - January 2015

Kindergarten registration will commence on January 16, 2015 for the 2015-16 school year. Registration forms are available on YRDSB’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Children who turn four or five years old during 2015, live within the school boundary and whose parents are public school tax supporters will be eligible to register for kindergarten. A kindergarten information session for parents is being planned for this spring. For more information please visit the YRDSB website or contact your local school.

It's all about the Goats! Goats give back! Children in Action's Global action... raising funds for Goats.

At our last school character assembly, students in the CIA group shared information about this year's school focus on fundraising for the the Free the Children campaign.  The challenge was put forward to all classes in the school to identify a way to raise funds to purchase a goat for a family in the same village of Kenya that we supported last year in building a school.  The goat provides the family with a source of nutritious milk and sustainable income.  Each goat costs $50.  Some examples so far:
Ms. Wong (Gr. 2) and Ms. Seehra's (Gr. 5/6) classes are working together to create hot chocolate packages for sale throughout the winter months.
Grades 7 and 8 classes are hosting a holiday event at school  to celebrate the upcoming holidays. Students will donate funds by purchasing popcorn and treats to attend a movie afternoon.
