The Week in Review…
Student Safety
This is a reminder to all families that our supervision for students on the yard does not begin until 8:45 a.m. Please make sure that your children are not unsupervised by ensuring that they arrive on or after 8:45 a.m. In addition, students are to remain outside on the playground until the bell sounds for them to line up. School staff are assigned to supervise entry. During rainy days or extreme cold (i.e., -20°C or colder) we will bring the students in sooner, and follow our indoor entry process.

Parents of Kindergarten students who are arriving late to school are asked to bring their children into the school through the front doors and sign them in at the office. Please do not knock on the classroom door or walk them directly to class. All visitors, including parents, must report to the office and get a visitor pass.

The Week in Review…
School Safety
This is a reminder to parents that our drop-off and pick-up times are the busiest times around the school. All drivers are reminded to use extra caution when travelling through school zones. Students are reminded to use sidewalks, and not take short cuts through our parking lots. In the interest of student safety, we respectfully ask that parents do not enter the parking lot before dismissal as this only encourages children to walk unsupervised through the parking lot.

Recycling Awareness
In the past, we have used plastic bags in our recycling bins. Plastic bags have become a very large concern in our landfills and as a school we are trying to reduce our environmental footprint. To help diminish this problem, we are removing plastic bags from recycling containers in most classrooms.
In classrooms, the recycling bins will be used for paper products only! This will remove leaks and odours from the classrooms. Large blue recycling bins will be placed in the halls during lunch for wet recycling products (e.g., Swiss Chalet containers, coffee cups, pop cans). Please have a conversation with your child/children to help them understand the new process, and to appreciate the need to help the environment.

Social Media
I recently had a conversation with a parent who was concerned about their child’s online profile on a social media app called Sarahah. The app is a social networking service for providing anonymous feedback to users. The concern is in its potential for cyberbullying. As with all social media platforms, parents are urged to closely monitor their child’s incoming and outgoing communications, and report to the school any forms of on-line bullying.

Sports Update
Congratulations to the Jr. Volleyball Team. They played in a tournament on Wednesday and placed 3rd. The team played well as a group, and improved with each game. Go Bengals!

Grade 1 French Immersion Information Sessions and Registrations

Information Sessions
Information sessions for Grade 1 entry into the French Immersion (FI) program will take place at French Immersion schools that have a Grade 1 program on January 18, 2018 at 7 p.m.
Please visit YRDSB’s website in January 2018 http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/fi/Pages/Program-Locations.aspx) to find the FI program location for your elementary school location.

Registration
FI registration will begin on January 19, 2018. Parents or guardians of Senior Kindergarten students entering Grade 1 in 2018, and wishing to enroll in the FI Program, can visit or call their home school office and request an Office Index Card - short version. This Office Index Card must be signed by the principal of the home school. Parents or guardians then take this form, along with one piece of identification showing their address to the designated FI program location to register, between January 19 and February 9, 2018.  Registration during this period is not first come, first served.

Late Registrations
Late registrations are those submitted after February 9, 2018.  Late registrations will be treated on a first- come, first-served basis and will be considered subsequent to registrations received during the registration period should overflow be necessary.

Accommodation Plan
YRDSB’s FI Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency and equity of access to all students in York Region and will enable YRDSB to continue to offer the FI program to all who wish to enrol. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or Single Track settings, in a variety of configurations. In order to meet community needs and optimize available space in our schools, a community's Grade 1-8 FI program may be provided over more than one school during the course of a student's FI education. Space requirements at some schools may mean that siblings are in different schools for primary dual track French Immersion programs due to differing grade structures. Like any of our schools across the Board, changes to school boundaries, and/or the accommodation model for the French Immersion program may need to be considered when new schools open, a school experiences enrolment growth, and program changes occur. This will allow flexibility in addressing community needs and the opportunity to use existing space in schools.

More information is available on the Board’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Please note: Some of the FI accommodation plans will require facility modifications or the development of new schools and will require short-term transition plans that might include overflow while we work toward the long-term vision. Overflow refers to situations in which the Board directs students to attend a school other than their community school or optional program for a specific period of time, as defined in Policy #108.

CIA Bracelets
Children in Action (CIA) is hosting a Valentine’s fundraiser selling Rafikis. The Rafikis we are selling are in support of education, food and water. A portion of the money from each handmade Rafiki goes towards empowering women in Kenya to help them to earn money to send their children to school.
The word Rafiki means “friend” in Swahili, so buy one for your friend, and know that you’re making an impact AND getting a pretty bracelet!
Starting on Monday, January 15th, orders for Rafiki bracelets can be handed in to CIA members in the front foyer at morning recess until Thursday, January 18th. Payment can be made through School Cash Online or in cash.

Tamil Heritage Month
January is Tamil Heritage month, and prominent in this month is a harvest festival called Thai Pongal. The festival is similar in nature to Thanksgiving celebrations recognized in North America. Historically, Tamil culture was an agriculture-based civilization where farmers depended on their cattle, timely rain and the Sun for a bountiful harvest. Once a year during the Thai Pongal festival they celebrated the prosperity brought to them with a plentiful harvest.
