First Day

Good afternoon Bayview Hill families,

I hope all of you had an enjoyable summer and the kids are ready and excited to come back to school. Bayview Hill’s staff have been working hard to get the school ready for a fantastic start. In the office, Mrs. Langin and Mrs. Clark have welcomed a new member to our team. Please say hello to Mrs. Adamis when you come by the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In addition, they have managed to process a whole lot of new registrations as well as all the usual start of the year work. Caretaking staff have the school shining and looking amazing. We were fortunate to have had ten classrooms painted this year and things are looking wonderful. I know you will share in thanking Christina, Wing, Toni, Carman and Russell for their hard work when you see their smiling faces around the building. Throughout the school our teachers have been in this week to set up the classrooms and other learning spaces. They have created welcoming classrooms for your children to enter into a new year of learning. Mr. Frank Franco, our new principal, will be officially joining us on September 10th, but has been into the school a number of times already. Until Mr. Franco arrives, we welcome Mr. Brian Stone to Bayview Hill.

Please take a moment to read below for important information about the first day of school.

School Hours:
-          8:45am – Yard is supervised by school staff
-          9:00am – Entry
-          10:40am to 11:10am – Recess
-          12:50pm to 1:50pm – Lunch
-          3:30pm - Dismissal

Entry Procedure:
-          On the first day of school students are asked to gather at the back of the school.
-          The doors will have signs indicating where students in each grade should line up.
-          Students will be escorted by their teachers to a classroom in the school where they will be sorted into their new classes.

Class Placement:
-          Students were assigned to their classes based on a thorough process in the spring. Learning style and friendships were important considerations.
-          If you have a concern about a class placement, please communicate your concern to the office in writing.

Parking Lot:
-          In the mornings, please remember to pull all the way up in the bus loop before stopping your vehicle
-          The parking lot is closed to community traffic from 8:45am to approximately 9:00am as our busses arrive
-          The parking lot is also closed from 3:20pm to approximately 3:45pm daily for safe dismissal

Bussing:
-          Go to www.schoolbuscity.com to check your child’s bussing eligibility
-          Pick-up and drop-off times and locations are available there
-          Students not eligible for bussing will not be permitted on the busses
-          Bus times are only approximate in the first couple of weeks at school. You are advised to arrive early at your stop.

Picking Up Your Child:
-          Please ensure your child knows how they are getting home on the first day of school
-          It is a good idea to write primary and young junior students a reminder note about this that they can share with their teachers
-          Establish a meeting place for after school the first few days
-          A reminder that all students are instructed to exit out the back doors of the school

Junior Kindergarten:
-          Our JK students will start school at 2:00pm on September 4th.
-          JK parents are welcome to stay for a reception in the Learning Commons after drop off
-          Please sign in at the office.

It will be wonderful to see all of you on Tuesday. Until then, have a great long weekend!

Sincerely,  Mrs. Galpin

Thursday, June 28, 2018 Early Dismissal in Elementary Schools

All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to improving student achievement and well-being.  On Thursday, June 28, 2018, an early release day will take place to allow elementary teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day.  These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that support student success.
As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 28, 2018 only.  Students will be dismissed early that day at 12 noon.  Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transportation at this time.  Parents/guardians whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule.

Staffing Changes
Each year our Staff changes for a variety of reason. Change can be a hard for some of our students, so this is why we are letting the community know of the changes before the school year is finished. The Children in Action (CIA) will be collecting used books from the BHES community from Monday, June 11th to Friday, June 15th.  Books can be sent to your child's homeroom and will be collected from each classroom on a daily basis. All used books will be sold at our upcoming Carnival on June 19th for $1. All donations will go to 360 Kids in Richmond Hill.

Some information about 360 Kids:
·         360 Kids is an organization that assists at-risk youths.
·         The organization recognizes that these at-risk youths need a wide range of supports to help them rebuild their lives.
·         360 kids now serves over 3,000 youth, each year from every municipality in York.
·         They have built a Richmond Hill Hub, which is a centre for youths and offers essential services to them.
·         Their mission statement is "To help youth overcome crisis and transition to a state of safety and stability".
·         Their vision is that "Every kid has access to a safe home".
·         Their website is https://www.360kids.ca if you would like to learn more.

Track and Field
Congratulations to all the Track and Field athletes who participated in the Area Track and Field Meet on Wednesday, June 6th. All the athletes and the staff who supervised had a great day. Go Bengals!
Congratulations to the following students who will represent BHES at the Regional Track and Field:
·         Kylie Y. who placed 1st in Triple Jump
·         Alice F. who placed 1st in Shot Put
·         Kiyaanne K. who placed 2nd in 200 meters

Parking Lot
Road safety is an important issue for all, and especially important in school zones where the increased number of children poses a significant safety concern. Please be sure to use extra caution as you approach the school, and follow all directional signage. Cars have been observed recently travelling in the wrong direction through both the bus loop and the parking lot. As a reminder, all vehicles must enter the school parking lot and/or kiss and ride from the south entrance and leave safely through the north exit.
The kiss and ride/bus loop is also our designated fire route, and as such is always a no parking zone. On occasion, a by-law officer or YRP will ticket vehicles parked in the fire route. Any time you pull up in front of the school and exit your vehicle (with or without the engine running) to drop off a lunch or pick up a child is considered parking in the fire route and you may find yourself ticketed. Also, double-parking your vehicle in the parking lot with the engine running is an unsafe practice. Please park your vehicle on the road and approach the building on foot. We recognize the inconvenience this causes, but the alternative ticket is probably more inconvenient.

BHES PRIDE Day on June 11

At Bayview Hill Elementary School, we are committed to fostering a sense of belonging for all students, parents and staff, and work hard to build a learning community that is respectful, supportive and welcoming to all. June is Pride month, and while Pride events are focused on celebrating the LGBTQ community, it is also a celebration of diversity, equity and inclusivity.

On June 11th we will celebrate Pride as a school community in the following ways:
·         The Grade 7/8 students will have a panel discussion hosted by speakers from an organization called Youth Speak and identify as members of the LGBTQ community. The speakers will share their stories and then answer questions from the students.
·         The Pride flag will be on display in the front hall
·         Students and staff will be encouraged to wear a shirt that is one or the colours of the rainbow

Bike to School Week

Did you know...
·         Increased physical activity on your way to school has found to increase alertness and attention during the school day.
·         Biking to school is good for student mental health, reducing stress, depression, and anxiety, and increasing happiness and positive emotions.
·         Air pollution that is caused by motorized vehicles hurts children’s heart and lungs.

From Monday, May 28th to Friday, June 1st BHES will be participating in Bike to School Week. Students who bike to school will be entered to win daily bike-related prizes!

Junior Track and Field
On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, our Junior students competed in our school’s annual Track and Field meet. The competition was intense, and all athletes work hard for the chance to represent BHES at the upcoming Area Track and Field Meet. A big thank you to all the teachers who volunteered their time to organize all the events, and tabulate the results. Also, thank you to the teachers who supervised both the students and an event over the two days of the meet. Go Bengal!
