Thursday, June 28, 2018 Early Dismissal in Elementary Schools

All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to improving student achievement and well-being. On Thursday, June 28, 2018, an early release day will take place to allow elementary teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day. These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that support student success.

As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 28, 2018 only. Students will be dismissed early that day at 12 noon. Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transportation at this time. Parents/guardians whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule.

Staffing Changes

Each year our Staff changes for a variety of reason. Change can be a hard for some of our students, so this is why we are letting the community know of the changes before the school year is finished. As always, we continue to appreciate your support in this process and know that we can count on your parenting expertise to assist your child with adapting quickly and positively to the changes. We are very appreciative of all the work our staff does to make students feel safe and for creating a warm and inclusive learning environment. Please extend warm wishes to our staff who are moving on or going on a leave, and welcome with open arms those who are joining us in September…

Lunch Programs

Thank you to all our Lunch Program volunteers for the work they did so we did not have to prepare a lunch every day! The pizza and milk programs are finished. The last day for Sub lunch is Monday, June 25^th, and the last day for Swiss Chalet and Lunch Lady is Tuesday, June 26^th. With this in mind, please ensure your child has snacks and lunch each day this week!

Yearbook

Yearbooks are an excellent way to preserve the memories of a school year. Our Yearbook committee, which is made up of students and staff, have been working diligently to put together a beautiful book. To order a yearbook, go to:

PRIDE Day 2018

BHES celebrated Pride day on Monday, June 11^th. Many students and staff wore colorful T-shirts to show their support of inclusivity in our school. The grade 7 and 8 hosted Youth Speak in the Learning Commons. The speakers shared their stories and stressed the importance of honoring all identities and ensuring that our schools are safe places for everyone.

Carnival Volunteers Needed

Parent Council still needs volunteers to help make this year’s BHES Carnival a success.

CIA Book Drive

The Children in Action (CIA) will be collecting used books from the BHES community from Monday, June 11th to Friday, June 15th. Books can be sent to your child's homeroom and will be collected from each classroom on a daily basis. All used books will be sold at our upcoming Carnival on June 19th for $1. All donations will go to 360 Kids in Richmond Hill.

Some information about 360 Kids:

· 360 Kids is an organization that assists at-risk youths.

· The organization recognizes that these at-risk youths need a wide range of supports to help them rebuild their lives.

· 360 kids now serves over 3,000 youth, each year from every municipality in York.

· They have built a Richmond Hill Hub, which is a centre for youths and offers essential services to them.

· Their mission statement is "To help youth overcome crisis and transition to a state of safety and stability".

· Their vision is that "Every kid has access to a safe home".

Track and Field

Congratulations to all the Track and Field athletes who participated in the Area Track and Field Meet on Wednesday, June 6^th. All the athletes and the staff who supervised had a great day. Go Bengals!

Congratulations to the following students who will represent BHES at the Regional Track and Field:

· Kylie Y. who placed 1^st in Triple Jump

· Alice F. who placed 1^st in Shot Put

· Kiyaanne K. who placed 2^nd in 200 meters

Parking Lot

Road safety is an important issue for all, and especially important in school zones where the increased number of children poses a significant safety concern. Please be sure to use extra caution as you approach the school, and follow all directional signage. Cars have been observed recently travelling in the wrong direction through both the bus loop and the parking lot. As a reminder, all vehicles must enter the school parking lot and/or kiss and ride from the south entrance and leave safely through the north exit.

The kiss and ride/bus loop is also our designated fire route, and as such is always a no parking zone. On occasion, a by-law officer or YRP will ticket vehicles parked in the fire route. Any time you pull up in front of the school and exit your vehicle (with or without the engine running) to drop off a lunch or pick up a child is considered parking in the fire route and you may find yourself ticketed. Also, double-parking your vehicle in the parking lot with the engine running is an unsafe practice. Please park your vehicle on the road and approach the building on foot. We recognize the inconvenience this causes, but the alternative ticket is probably more inconvenient.

BHES PRIDE Day on June 11

At Bayview Hill Elementary School, we are committed to fostering a sense of belonging for all students, parents and staff, and work hard to build a learning community that is respectful, supportive and welcoming to all. June is Pride month, and while Pride events are focused on celebrating the LGBTQ community, it is also a celebration of diversity, equity and inclusivity.

On June 11th we will celebrate Pride as a school community in the following ways:

· The Grade 7/8 students will have a panel discussion hosted by speakers from an organization called Youth Speak and identify as members of the LGBTQ community. The speakers will share their stories and then answer questions from the students.

· The Pride flag will be on display in the front hall

· Students and staff will be encouraged to wear a shirt that is one or the colours of the rainbow
